Helen calls on Council for assurances over Coundon cemetery

Helen, along with local County Councillor Charlie Kay, met with local residents and grieving relatives to express her sympathy for those affected by the mismanagement of health and safety checks.

Helen has written to the Chief Executive of Durham County Council to highlight the inadequate communication with the families of those buried in the cemetery and to support their call for compensation to pay for the restoration of the gravestones.

Helen said:

"It is clear from talking to people today that these are graves that are quite new and belong to people who are much loved. The graves are well kept by local people and it is therefore unsurprising that there is such a feeling of distress and upset. I hope that the council will acknowledge this and ensure that this does not happen to any other community."
