Helen Goodman MP

Lots of constituents have written to me concerned about the government's failure to make creating an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary a diplomatic priority in the run up to important international talks in October.

Just 3.9% of the world’s oceans are designated for protection, despite a global commitment to achieve 10% by 2020.

As such, it is ever more crucial that the UK continues to lead the world in marine conservation and that we do all we can to ensure the protection and sustainability of our oceans.

I have long supported measures to protect our marine environment and I support the establishment of the blue belt in order to protect and enhance the marine environment of the UK and our overseas territories. I also support proposals to deliver an ecologically coherent network of Marine Conservation Zones around the UK in order to ensure that the benefits of marine conservation are felt domestically too.

I asked the Minister to address this with President Trump during his visit later this week however I was not reassured by his rather flippant response.

Helen challenges Foreign Minister to tackle ocean protection with President Trump

Lots of constituents have written to me concerned about the government's failure to make creating an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary a diplomatic priority in the run up to important international talks...

Last year the Tories promised that no school would see budget cuts yet half the schools in Bishop Auckland continue to face real cuts, some of over a thousand pounds per child!!! It is clear from her response that she does not care about the damage her party are doing to the life chances of children in this constituency!

Helen re-educates the Prime Minister on school funding cuts

Last year the Tories promised that no school would see budget cuts yet half the schools in Bishop Auckland continue to face real cuts, some of over a thousand pounds...

Last week Helen presented a cheque to Woodhouse Close Church and Community Centre foodbank, on behalf of Bishop Auckland Constituency Labour Party.

There has been a 45% rise in the number of people needing help from this food bank in the last year, mainly due to benefit delays, hardship, fuel poverty and people in low pay jobs being laid off for a period of weeks.

Helen said: "I regret that we have to have to have these foodbanks.

"People visit my office and there really is nothing left to do except send them to the foodbank.

"We’ve had far too many cuts in the benefits system, which really ought to be supporting people and providing a proper safety net.

"But as long as it isn’t, it’s important that we all support our local foodbanks.”
