Last week Helen presented a cheque to Woodhouse Close Church and Community Centre foodbank, on behalf of Bishop Auckland Constituency Labour Party.
There has been a 45% rise in the number of people needing help from this food bank in the last year, mainly due to benefit delays, hardship, fuel poverty and people in low pay jobs being laid off for a period of weeks.
Helen said: “I regret that we have to have to have these foodbanks.
“People visit my office and there really is nothing left to do except send them to the foodbank.
“We’ve had far too many cuts in the benefits system, which really ought to be supporting people and providing a proper safety net.
“But as long as it isn’t, it’s important that we all support our local foodbanks.”
