Thank you to the people of Bishop Auckland for giving me the opportunity to serve them for the last 14 years. It has been the greatest privilege of my life.
I’d like to congratulate Dehenna on her victory. She has made some big promises, including a new A&E and a new bypass at Toft Hill. In 2023 she’ll be held to account for these.
The road to 10 Downing Street runs through Bishop Auckland. The Labour Party is not going to win until it gets a leader who commands the confidence of the British public – however good its manifesto and however strong its principles.
Moreover, when we don’t do this, we let down the very people we were established to serve. And this is my deepest regret.
This is the fifth General Election I have fought, and I have never known such a mendacious and deceitful Tory campaign. It began with £350 million on the side of a bus. The big lie is that the British people can have the international status of the 1950s and the standard of living of the 21st Century.
The Tories have done well in this election, but by raising expectations so high they risk a further collapse in public trust.
Normally, when we thank the police on election night, it’s a formality. On this occasion I am truly grateful to them for keeping us safe.
I’d also like to thank my brilliant campaign team and all the people who came to help throughout the campaign, especially the Newcastle contingent.
