Lord Foster and Helen Goodman MP call for Remain vote

Current Labour MP for Bishop Auckland, Helen Goodman and former Labour MP Lord Derek Foster are calling for constituents to vote for Britain to stay in the EU.

They said:

“Between us we have represented Bishop Auckland for nearly 40 years and it is our firm view that it is in the interests of the people of Bishop Auckland to vote to stay in.

“Over 3 million British jobs are linked to trade with Europe. That includes 5,000 right here in Bishop Auckland. Those jobs depend on our ability to export goods to other countries in the European Union. Almost half of Britain’s exports are sold to other EU countries.

“Hitachi have said that they invested here because of our membership of the EU and our access to its markets and that a Leave vote ‘would affect the stability that we need for continued investment and long-term growth’. Another major local employer, GSK, has also said leaving creates uncertainty and ‘Staying in would be better for the health and wealth of the UK.’

“If we leave Europe, nobody knows what our future trading relationship with the EU would be, but it would be worse. That uncertainty puts local jobs at risk.”
