Teesdale MP raises concerns about staff shortages in prisons

Local MP Helen Goodman raises concerns following Sunday's disturbances at Deerbolt Young Offender Institute in Barnard Castle.

“Yesterday’s disturbance at Deerbolt is very concerning and reflects concerns that prison staff have been telling me. The government has reduced staffing numbers by the thousands since 2010, and closed a number of well performing prisons which has increased over-crowding. Violence has risen year on year under this Government, and serious assaults on staff increased by 44% since 2010.

“They have also wasted millions on severance payments for staff, only to then have to start an emergency drive to rehire staff, in the face of their prisons crisis. Over £56 million was spent on redundancy payments in 2013 alone.”
